Carmel Marie (Sevilla) Young was born October 3, 1950, in Palo Alto, CA. to parents Mary and Maynard Sevilla. She was the eldest of three children. Carmel graduated from Palo Alto High School in 1968. She went on to attend Foothill Jr. College in Los Altos Hills, CA before transferring to Seattle University. During this time she met her first husband, Marshall Lawrence "Larry" Clevenson who was pursuing his PhD. in Statistics and Math from Stanford University. Carmel and Larry married on August 4, 1972. Larry got a position as a Professor of Statistics at the University of British Columbia to be near Carmel at Seattle University. When Carmel graduated in 1973 with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing, the two lived in Vancouver, BC. where Carmel worked at Vancouver General Hospital. In 1978 Carmel and Larry divorced. While living in Vancouver, Carmel met her second husband, Gary Young, through a mutual friend and began dating. They married in 1978 and had their first daughter, Erin Margaret “Bija” Young, later that year. Carmel and Gary moved to New Brunswick in 1979 and settled in Gary’s hometown of Sussex. Carmel got a position at the Sussex Health Center where she went on to work for nearly 20 years. In 1979 they had their second child, a son named Adam Porter Young. In 1982 they had their third and final child, a daughter named Katherine Robin “Ayah” Young. In 1995, Carmel returned to California with her husband and children. They lived in the Bay Area for a brief period before settling in Sacramento where Carmel worked for many years at Catholic Healthcare West. Carmel and Gary separated in 2000 but remained close friends. In 2007 Carmel purchased a summer home in Sussex and began traveling back and forth between the two places she considered home, Sussex and Sacramento. On June 15, 2010, Carmel died unexpectedly in Sacramento CA, of a heart attack related to diabetes. Carmel was a cherished daughter, sister, friend, mother and caregiver who dedicated her life to nurturing the well being of others. She practiced nursing for almost 40 years. She enjoyed spending time with her family, friends, and pets; camping and crafting were among her hobbies. She is much loved by many and will forever live on in our hearts and memories.
